Montaldo Scarampi, the “roof” of the Val Tiglione, an ancient fiefdom of the Asti bankers

Landscape

Montaldo Scarampi rises on the hills of Val Tiglione.

It is about 17 km from Asti, the provincial capital.

History

Mons Altus (later Montaldo) is mentioned in a document dated 1018.

As can easily be guessed, the place name takes its cue from the elevated position of the village.

The addition of Scarampi is linked to a historical fact, namely, the passage of the territory (in 1339) from the Marquises of Incisa della Rocchetta to the Scarampi family.

Over time, the village passed under the rule of Oddone Boverio, then to the Municipality of Asti, to the aforementioned Scarampi family, and under the jurisdiction of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan.

Montaldo Scarampi is home to the Comunità Collinare Val Tiglione e Dintorni.

Food and wine and typical products

The economy of Montaldo Scarampi is mainly focused on viticulture: excellent production of Piedmont and Monferrato DOC wines (Barbera d'Asti, Barbera del Monferrato, Grignolino d'Asti, Freisa d'Asti).

Other typical products include artisanal cured meats and honey.

To be seen

The parish Church of the Most Holy Annunciation (Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata) stands in the center of the town, a few steps from the town hall.

Furthermore, worth a visit is the Church of St. Martin (Chiesa di San Martino), located in a panoramic position.

Of great interest is also the Museum of the Peasant Family — Church of St. Nicholas | Museo della Famiglia Contadina — Chiesa di San Nicolò.

The Hall of Trophies Dr. Lelio De Nardo (Sala dei Trofei Dott. Lelio De Nardo), also jokingly called the Montaldo “safari”, is set up in the municipal headquarters.

Finally, the ideal place for a selfie is the vantage point where the Ferro del Mare Padano sculpture has been installed.

Curiosity

At the institutional referendum on June 2, 1946, the people of Montaldo, called upon to choose between Monarchy or Republic, voted unitedly for the retention of power in the hands of the House of Savoy.
