Agliano Terme, the source of wellness in Monferrato

Agliano Terme lies on the extreme southern side of Monferrato.

It is about 17 km from Asti, the provincial capital.

Agliano Terme's international fame is due to the quality of its thermal waters.

History

400 d.C.

First written evidence of the presence of Agliano (under the toponyms of Aulianum, Alianum, Ajanum, Aglanum).

Middle Ages

Thanks to Bianca Lancia, a splendid woman with whom Emperor Frederick II of Swabia fell in love, Agliano became internationally known.

The town was the scene of wars between Astigiani and Alessandrini and later between Guelphs and Ghibellines.

1531

Agliano became part of the territories owned by the Savoy.

Seventeenth century: the destruction of the castle

The ancient manor of Agliano Terme was destroyed, in the 17th century, in the struggle between the Duke of Savoy and the Spanish, in battle for the succession of Monferrato.

Today, in Piazza Castello, stands the Aqueduct Tower, which appears to be a reconstruction of one of the towers of the vanished castle.

World War II

Important is the role of the town in the partisan struggle against the fascist regime.

1998

Agliano Terme receives the gold medal for partisan valor.

Agliano Terme is a territory with a strong wine vocation.

Here are produced various fine wines, including Barbera d'Asti DOC, Barbera d'Asti, Freisa d'Asti, Dolcetto, Cortese, Brachetto and Chardonnay.

To “lady” Barbera are dedicated events of absolute appeal as the Barbera Fish Festival, dedicated to the encounter between the Norwegian cod and Barbera d'Asti, Barbera Unplugged and the Giornate della Barbera.

Agliano Terme is home to the Agenzia di Formazione Professionale delle Colline Astigiane, an important school dedicated to catering professionals.

To be seen

The beautiful Gothic-style parish Church of St. James the Greater (Chiesa di San Giacomo Maggiore) is the oldest and richest in art in the municipal area.

Moreover, worth seeing are the Church of the Brotherhood of St. Michael (Chiesa della Confraternita di San Michele), the Sanctuary of the Annunciation (Santuario dell'Annunciazione), the Aqueduct Tower (visitable).

Finally, the wetland of Paludo, the viewpoint of Bricco Roche, the viewing terrace in via Dante, a colorful vineyard located at the entrance to the town, the artistic barrel Brichet tribute to Mondrian are worthy mentioning.

Curiosity

In 1996, the name of the municipality changed from Agliano d'Asti to Agliano Terme.

The troubled love between Bianca Lancia and Frederick II of Swabia is the subject of legend.
