Villafranca d’Asti lies in the North of Astigiano.

It is about 15 km from Asti, the provincial capital.

History

Historians believe that the area where Villafranca d'Asti stands today was inhabited as early as Roman times.

Supporting this hypothesis are archaeological findings in the area.

Villafranca d'Asti was founded in the thirteenth century by the Municipality of Asti and was the result of the union of several scattered villages.

Today's name, Villafranca d'Asti, was sanctioned by Royal Decree in 1863.

Administration

On Via Roma, number 50, in the building that houses the municipal offices, is the headquarters of the Unione di Comuni Colli del Monferrato.

Food and wine and typical products

Among the most important productions are those referring to honey, wine, and cured meats.

Local wines are Freisa and Barbera.

Must be visited the Church of Saints Helen and Eusebius (Collegiate Church of St. Helen) — Chiesa dei Santi Elena ed Eusebio (Collegiata di Sant'Elena), Palazzo Aghemio, the Church of St. John the Evangelist — St. John Theater (Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista - Teatro San Giovanni), and the Church of Our Lady of the Snow (or of Vulpilio) — Chiesa della Madonna della Neve (o di Vulpilio).

The territory of Villafranca d'Asti is dotted with votive pillars (see: Route | Pillars of Faith) as evidence of the deep-rooted religious cult in the area.

For picnickers and day-trippers, the presence of a Bialbero, a cherry tree grown on top of a mulberry tree, is noteworthy.
