It's the only tower still remain of the four placed at the four corners of the first order of walls constituted in an elongated rectangle, which protected the "Airali," while a second set of walls, protecting "La Villa," was bordered by two gates dating back to the 10th century: Porta Ottoniana and Porta Maestra.
The jambs and lintels of these two gates are still visible even though they have undergone considerable changes over time.
