Francesco Cirio was born in Nizza Monferrato on December 24, 1835.
In January 1836, his parents, Giuseppe and Maria Luigia Berta, moved to the town of Fontanile where his father, a baker, set up a store selling oil, pasta, bread with an adjoining slaughterhouse and various foods.
In his teenage years used to walk to the market in Nizza Monferrato to buy vegetables, which he then resold, on the way back home, to the farmsteads.
Francesco Cirio is considered one of the most important Italian entrepreneurs, a pioneer in the canning industry, moral founder of the Cirio company.

The municipal project "I muri raccontano..." (The walls tell...) is a major camouflage of the town created by Luigi Amerio: through pictorial art, the walls and house facades represent Fontanile's past from the Middle Ages to the present day.
